Students can begin working as a registered nurse (RN) with just an associate’s degree. However, more advanced job opportunities and higher salaries are possible with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN). An RN to BSN program provides the knowledge necessary for practicing nurses to further their professional education. Students learn advanced nursing and leadership skills needed to succeed in today’s healthcare environment.
An RN to BSN program takes about two years to complete. It may vary slightly depending on the specific program and whether the student attends class full or part time. Online programs are especially flexible for nurses who want to continue working as RNs while obtaining their BSN. These colleges have courses that can be completed around their work schedule.
Application Process
The application procedure varies by school and program. However, students can expect similar requirements and minimum standards for admission:
- Application form with application fee
- Official transcripts from LPN program and other posts-secondary schools attended (Note: Make sure to request an evaluation of previous coursework for RN transfer credits.)
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), depending on the program requirements.
- Letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
RN to BSN Program Requirements
RN to BSN programs typically takes about two to three years to complete; less time than a traditional bachelor’s degree. However, if a student works full-time or decides to take additional classes, an extra year may be necessary.
RN to BSN programs includes both classroom learning and clinical training. Requirements vary according to the degree program, but students must typically complete the following:
- All undergraduate coursework in addition to any general education requirements determined by the school.
- Fulfill clinical rotation requirements. (Note: Clinicals are coordinated with the student’s local community, hospital or clinic.)
- Meet minimum GPA requirement, as defined by the school and program.
- Upon graduation, RN candidates register for the NCLEX-RN examination.
Once you have completed all program requirements and passed the NCLEX-RN examination, you’re ready to begin an exciting career in the healthcare profession. However, choosing the right school is an important first step. Without proper training and support, you risk the safety of your patients and losing your license.
